BNC of ICOMOS was founded in 1964 right after the establishment of ICOMOS. In 1996 it was registered as a non-profit association under the Persons and Family Act. That same year BNC organized in Sofia the 11th General Assembly of ICOMOS, which has been pronounced the most successful one so far. BNC’s activity has entered a new phase of active partnership with international organizations, national and local authorities. In 2002 BNC was re-registered under the new Act on non-profitable juridical persons as organization acting for the public benefit.

Publishing
The publishing activity takes an important role in the strategic plans of the Bulgarian National Committee of ICOMOS – related to its serious engagement in various trends – the theme for cultural tourism, legal regime of the cultural heritage in the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as scientific reports regarding specific monuments.
Heritage at Risk
The task to present specific Bulgarian monuments at risk seems to be very easy and at the same time it is very difficult. The reason for this ostensible contradiction is in the simple fact that the Bulgarian cultural heritage, in general, is in a situation of mortal danger. Realising that this conclusion may sound quite pathetic, we will try to state impartially facts, on which it is based.
